Haines Junction, Yukon Territory – Wednesday, July 20, 2011
Rain, Rain, go away to somewhere that needs it. Took our time hitting the road today. Spent time on updating the blog entries for the last three days, did some housekeeping and finally went to McDonald’s around 2:30 to use internet. Posted, checked e-mail/facebook and did some research on camping reservations for Denali National Park. We finally left Walmart around 4pm. Stopped at a Sani-dump close by and were on the road at 4:30. The rain has stopped for now. Since it stays light so late we figured we could get a few miles up the highway. Great scenery this time of day.
We stopped at the Visitors Center in Haines Junction around 7pm. Saw this interesting post on the corner and this little guy having his dinner.
We also saw this sign across the street and had to check it out. While there we found out one meaning of the GST that is added onto almost every purchase. Their interpretation was Gouge & Screw Tax.
While at the Visitors Center we met a couple who were on their way back from Alaska. They asked if we liked roller coasters, because the road between here and the border is really exciting. The lady at the information desk confirmed that the road is in pretty rough shape from here on up. Guess we are in for some fun tomorrow.
Getting late and wanted to find a place to stay. Two campgrounds in town, but don’t need hook-ups tonight. Stopped at two rest areas, but they had the No Overnight Parking signs. Finally about 12 miles out of town we found the Spruce Beetle Trailhead parking area and no signs, so this is it ,our spot for the night. We’ll check out the trail in the morning.
