Watson Lake, Yukon Territory – Saturday July 16, 2011
We thoroughly enjoyed our camp spot along the Trout River. We had our breakfast outside and took in the sights and sounds before we prepared to leave. Weather today is better, sun is out some and only light rain off and on.
There is lots to see along our curvy route. Bridges, bridges everywhere. Hard to fathom what it was like when they built this road back in 1942 and had to cross the water areas.
We caught these guys along our way. Wood bison and black bear.
We stopped at Whirlpool Canyon, not what we expected, but a really amazing place. The Liard River swirls violently around and deposits all the debris on the shore. The rock and shale formations were unique and the main channel was white water rapids. But despite the name, no whirlpool.
We pulled out at a place called Allen’s Lookout, a high spot above the Liard River where outlaws took advantage of the view to plan raids on the riverboats.
We finally made it to the Yukon Territory after crossing back and forth between British Columbia six different times. I told you it was a curvy road!
We made it to Watson Lake, YT whose famous attraction is the Sign Post Forest. Couldn’t really capture the vastness, but here’s a few pics.
Of course we had to look for places we knew. Here’s what we found.
Time to figure out where we’ll park tonight. We ended up in a commercial campground because the areas we would normally pick to boondock had No Overnight Parking signs. Maybe the Yukon isn’t as RV friendly. Got settled and went to catch the 7:30pm show at the Northern Lights Centre. It is a planetarium like setting with 360 degree dome and reclining seats. First half of the show was about space travel and astronauts and the last half was about the Aurora Borealis. Great show.
