ALASKA . . . . . You Betcha!!

Tok, Alaska, USA – Friday, July 22, 2011

Up to a beautiful day. Not looking forward to the road, but are excited to be making it to Alaska today. We headed for Beaver Creek, our last Canadian town. They had a Catholic Church housed in an old Quonset hut and Buckshot Betty’s with more baked goods.

The road is just like yesterday, but maybe not as many gravel areas. We passed several low areas and lakes where the Trumpeter Swans come back to have their families. We caught this group.

Well, at 2:30 Mountain Time/1:30 Alaska Time we made it and  we only  took 52 days!

The actual border is marked here and you can see the cleared path through the trees that marks the line.

Ok, now for customs. Once again we made sure we didn’t have anything we weren’t supposed to, had all our papers, and were ready for inspection. NOT! We were asked a few questions, they looked at our passports and vehicle registration and said “have a nice day”. Oh well, we’re glad it wasn’t a big deal.

The most fantastic thing that happened was the road. It was beautiful, smooth, freshly paved and like driving on silk. WOW, could it be like this all the way to Tok?? No such luck, but it was nice for awhile. There were still bad spots, but not in as bad shape as in Canada. Mother nature makes it hard to keep up especially with a road bed of permafrost.

We stopped at a place called Border Crossing Lodge/RV Park and talked with the owner about how long the RV part stays open. He told us he usually turns off the water not long after labor day, but still has some sites with electric. I guess we had better get busy checking out Alaska.

We made it to Tok, AK and headed for the visitors center to get ino on AK. Talked with the attendant for about half an hour about all there is to see and do. Have some planning to do, so off to find a place for two nights. We found a spot and sat out and celebrated our arrival in Alaska with the bottle of Champagne we brought from home. Feels good to finally be here.
