Chicken, Alaska – Sunday July 24, 2011
Took care of some busywork this morning, worked on the blog, talked on the phone and mailed some cards.
We decided to go to Chicken today which is up the Taylor highway. A little explanation here. A road between two towns is called a highway. Doesn’t matter if it’s paved, gravel or dirt.
Chicken is 80 miles from Tok and the road is all paved more or less except for the last 1.8 miles which is all gravel.
This area along the Taylor Highway shows the results of a forest fire. Those are the remains of spruce trees.
This picture shows you the difference in the road surface. Pavement to chip seal to gravel.
Here you can almost see the sign for “Chicken Community” our destination.
This Is a dredge used to mine for gold. The original location was about a mile away. Using 2 bulldozers, a front end loader, and a flatbed semi over a period of 30 days they moved it to the Chicken Gold Camp where we are staying. It’s no longer a working dredge, but they do give tours.
Here’s some of the local wildlife.
And the big annual event in the area . . .
And finally, here is, and I quote, “Beautiful Downtown Chicken”.
It consists of a gift store, liquor store, saloon and a café. If you go into one, the help comes running from the others to assist you. I think there were only two people running the whole town.
