Heartland America & Carhenge

Hot Springs, SD – Friday June 17, 2011

Trains kept us awake last night.  The tracks were about a half mile away, and they were busy. However, it still beat trying to find another camp ground in that storm that came through late yesterday afternoon.

We saw the Cadillac Ranch on Wednesday so we figured we’d keep the experience going and visit Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska.  The positioning of the cars is supposed to be the same as the stones at Stonehenge.

Off to the side of were some more car sculptures.  This one (called Ford Seasons) supposedly depicts the four seasons of the Nebraska landscape.  Do you get it?

Here’s another sign that you’re in heartland America.

Ever long for the good ole days? At least they had a roof and walls. This is a replica of a trading post circa 1837.

The above picture and the one below were taken at the Fur Trade museum in Chadron, NE.  We thought we were going to see all different kinds of fur, but it turned out to be about all types of commerce in the 1700 and 1800’s. Instead of just fur it turned out to be about guns, textiles, beads, paints, knives and silver too. They also explained the different ways and means that the trading occurred. Interesting exhibits and information.

Arrived in Hot Springs about 6PM at the KOA.  Signed up for one night. (This is what’s known as a foreshadow.) Had trouble getting level, wifi signal is weak, but the weather is beautiful. We sat outside for the first time on the trip.  Enjoyed it until we both got too cold and went inside!
