Hot Springs, SD – Saturday, June 18 2011
Awoke at 7, it was 64 degrees and sunny. After coffee and some research, we found out that some of the most scenic and winding routes in the Black Hills are near by. We decided to stay another night and let Elemente’ (our 2003 Honda Element tow car) “off the hook” and go for a drive. Big Guy gets a break today.
Went through Hot Springs, Pringle and Custer, SD and then to Wind Cave National Park. Didn’t do the cave tour, but enjoyed the visitors center and drive.
Custer State Park was our next attraction. Some of the best drives are through the park. We did the whole loop including Needles Hwy and Iron Mountain Road with all the twists, curves, tunnels and pigtails (see our route below). Fantastic scenery. Stopped at Coolidge Tower for an incredible view of the area. Saw a wedding taking place at one of the many lakes.
Mt Rushmore National Monument was along the route so we had to stop. Ended up spending 2 hours there. Pretty amazing.
The drive was great and the weather was perfect. We saw lots of wildlife and incredible landscapes.
Unfortunately it was 9:30pm when we got back to the RV. Cats were hungry, we were tired (a good tired) but a great day all in all.
