Camp Walmart, Whitehorse, YT – June 4, 2014
WHO’S SHAKING THE RV??? After the encounter with the scruffy bicycle rider who knocked on Big Guy last night wanting us to give him some money because we were “rich”, we assumed it was him shaking the RV this morning in retaliation for us not complying with his wishes.
At 5AM our brains weren’t fully engaged, but it wasn’t long before we realized that the skinny little panhandler wasn’t capable of shaking a 12 ton motorhome like that.
Yes sirree! We were experiencing an earthquake. Big Guy was rocking and rolling, the doors were rattling, and we woke up wondering what the heck was going on.
Later we heard news reports that said a 5.7 magnitude earthquake had occurred about 100 miles from our location. Wow! Our first earthquake.
After realizing it was “just” an earthquake, we went back to sleep and got up around 7AM. Toady’s another big day. We are going drive Big Guy about 60 miles. Yep, we’re going to Whitehorse. We’ve enjoyed our 3 day stay in the woods, but it’s time to move on.
We’re not fully convinced the campground is “officially” open. But there have been signs they’re getting ready for visitors. Fresh firewood has been delivered, sites have been raked, and yesterday they were sanding the picnic tables in the rain. However the visitor centre is still confused about the campground status. We decide to leave some money in the “Iron Ranger” in appreciation of a nice campground.
As we were leaving EJ got this picture of a “Well equipped campsite” It’s complete with “sofa”and was very popular with the bicyclists.
On our way Emerald Lake came into view. A lake formed when the glaciers retreated, it gets its color from ‘marl’ that has settled in the water.
We arrive in Whitehorse, do the dump and fill thing, top off with fuel and join the RV crowd at Walmart.
The refrigerator is almost bare. So we’ll take this opportunity to fix that.
Alas, the best laid plans often fail when confronted with reality. Walmart didn’t have what we needed. The Canadian Super Store (think Canadian version of a Super Walmart) shelves were literally bare. We guess their supply truck got lost. Finally we found a grocery store that had most of what we needed.
We had been working hard for the last couple of days to get the blog updated. So naturally we wanted to get them posted, but we were thwarted on almost every front there too.
We tried to find an adequate internet connection at 2 McDonalds, 2 Tim Hortons, and 2 Starbucks before we finally stumbled upon a small area that was provided free wifi by the city. It was just barely good enough to upload our updates. How do these people survive with such slow internet connections? Boy are we spoiled.
Our goals mostly accomplished, we returned to Big Guy about 9PM to one very unhappy kitty. Dinner was 2 hours late!!!
It is amazing how many RV’s you can get in a small parking lot. Frank went up on the roof at 11pm to get these shots.
And to make things more interesting there were two street sweepers running through the parking lot. The had their lights and back up alarms going full force. It’s always an adventure at Camp Walmart!
