In our last post, we finished by mentioning the fresh water pump failure. At 11PM last night the brand new water pump died on us. It did give us a brief warning about 30 minutes earlier, when we had to turn its power off and on again for it to work. When Frank checked it out, it was extremely hot.
This morning, Frank emptied the storage compartment where the pump is located to diagnose the problem. Verdict? Dead pump. Fuse was good and power was present at the pump. The pump was about as useful as a hunk of rock. Fortunately Frank had saved the old pump that we replaced about 3 weeks ago. He had intended to dissect it when we got back to Orange Park to see if he could figure out what was wrong with it. It hadn't completely died, it just likes to run with all the faucets turned off and run the battery down. But at least it would still pump water. After about an hour we were back in business.
The Elks Lodge where we were staying was getting real popular. Yesterday they seemed to be preparing for some event and this morning we have two other RVs parked next to us. We don't know if it was because it was a Saturday, but if we could have sold tickets to the Sani-Dump for $5 apiece we'd be rich. There was a constant stream of RVs and Buses to the Dump all morning long. We slipped in and did our business and we are ready to hit the road.
We had a good road most of the day. We passed under this interesting railroad trestle.
It is also at the end of one of the hay harvests. We saw lots of fields that had the hay in windrows ready for the baling machine. Others were already through and had the hay stacked and stored.
At our fuel stop, Frank tightened up the lug nuts on the Element as recommended by the Honda dealer. No problems. We also continue to run into the odd problem of having a foreign credit card when it comes to trying to use it at the fuel pump. It won’t register on the pump swipe reader, but take it inside to the cashier and it reads just fine. They keep telling us that it’s because it’s not a Canadian issued credit card. Whatever, it still works.
We wanted to make it through Edmonton today, but it’s starting to get dark so we find a Walmart on the west side of town to hunker down for the night.
As soon as we get settled in, EJ says “Let’s go to the Mall!”, under the pretense of getting some exercise. Turns out the West Edmonton Mall is the largest Mall in North America. (I wonder if the Mall of the Americas knows about this?) It is three stories and has pirate ships in an indoor lake, water bumper boats, roller coasters, indoor swimming/wave pool with two story slides, an indoor ice skating rink, IMAX theater and more. The place was so big some stores had 2 or 3 different locations in the Mall. It also had two hotels attached so you could literally shop ‘till you drop.
We were there on a Saturday night and the place was packed. But, you could count the number people over 50 on both hands. We were definitely in the minority. We walked the first floor and called it a day. We didn’t think to take the camera, but it was really something to see.
Back to BG for a well earned rest.
