Out of Stealth Mode

Bloomfield, IA – June 17, 2012 Our map location.

We left Orange Park 30 days ago on the 17th of May  and we’re pretty much back into the travel mode.  Although it had only been a little over 5 months since we returned from our adventure last year, we found that we have had to retrain ourselves on lots of things.  The idiosyncrasies of “Big Guy’s” mechanical systems, where things are stored in the cabinets and bays,  remembering that those things have a tendency to jump out of the cabinets after a day on the road and so on.  We’ve relearned most of the routines and got our “travel legs” back, so to speak. The cats have also adjusted to life on the road, again.

P1070596 (1024x768)P1000391 (1024x768)

We have added a few new “toys” and tweaked some things to make our travels more comfortable. We wanted to have more reliable internet, so we got a hot spot that uses Verizon 3 or 4 G. Now EJ can look things up or check weather radar as we go down the road. The other big luxury we included is a roof mounted Dish satellite that finds the signals at the touch of a button! No more thirty minute set up for Frank.

We took some of the lessons we learned last year to heart and applied them to this trip.  One of things we’re doing different is using Passport America(PA) when we stay at some commercial campgrounds.  Our first night out we ended up in Milledgeville, GA at the Scenic Mountain RV Park.  This gave us the opportunity to use our PA discount for the first time and learn how it works.  First lesson, have cash. Most require cash since they are giving a 50% discount they’re not inclined to pay credit card fees too. So far with PA we’ve been paying $10 to $20 for a nights stay which is much more to our liking than the standard fees.

For instance, our next three nights were spent in the Blue Ridge Mineral Springs RV Park in Blue Ridge, GA.  This campground is pretty rustic although but did include wi-fi, cable tv, showers, restrooms, swimming pool, full hookups, 50 amp service and horse shoes.  But at $35 a night with no discounts, it’s a little pricey for what you get.

We had a great time visiting with friends Jim and Shelley who live just outside of Blue Ridge, GA in a beautiful cabin on a thickly wooded lot with a view of Blue Ridge Lake.  They always make us feel so welcome in their home. Jim put in his usual fine performance on the charcoal grill and Shelley worked her magic in the kitchen to prepare several feasts so delicious that we ate way too much.

P1070607 (1024x768)P1070610 (1024x768)

Sadly though, after a few days it was time to move on.  We didn’t want to wear out our welcome, and we had places to go.

We contacted Frank’s cousin Connie in Tullahoma, TN and made plans to visit with her since we were in the neighborhood.  But on the first leg of the trip from Blue Ridge we experienced a problem with Big Guy.  The Check Engine light came on and to protect the engine, power was reduced, meaning we crept up a few hills at 25 mph while  looking for a place to pull off.  We found a parking lot and broke out the engine manual to get a clue as to what the problem might be and decided to add some oil since it was a little low.   That seemed to fix the problem, so off we went towards Cloudland Canyon State Park.  The further we went and the more we talked, we decided that would be a waste since we would get in late and wouldn’t have time in the morning to really enjoy it.  Instead, we headed to the Walmart located in Fort Oglethorpe, GA.

Just as we pulled in the Check Engine light came on again.  By this time I was pretty sure that it was not an oil level problem.  I got on the Internet and did some more research and discovered that this particular engine is very sensitive to coolant levels.  So I checked that and saw that while it was still above the add level, it wasn’t completely topped off.  Using some of the supplies we carry with us,  I added some coolant and we’ll see if this relieves the problem.

We paid homage to Walmart by replenishing our oil reserves and buying several other odds and ends and settled in for the night.  About 3:30am I was awakened by some of the local inhabitants verbally abusing one another in the parking lot about 100 feet from Big Guy.  While I was thinking about calling 911, another car showed up and one of the original participants jumped in it and every body drove off. So who knew what that was all about?  The rest of the night was peaceful and EJ slept through the whole thing.

Next morning we made our way to Chattanooga and I-24 where we tackled Monteagle which I figured would be the ultimate test for Big Guy.  Monteagle is about 1300 foot higher than Chattanooga although it seems more than that as you go up an up for miles.  At the top we pulled into a nice rest area to stretch our legs have some lunch.  Big Guy performed flawlessly, so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

We had a good time in Tullahoma visiting with Connie and her mom.  We even had some Colonel Sanders chicken which we haven’t had in years.  Connie had to go to work the next morning and we began the trek west to Texas to see Frank’s Dad.

We headed for Memphis, TN where we decided to hole up for the Memorial Day weekend.  Anticipating that camp sites might be hard to find we arrived on a Thursday in order to stake our claim at T. O. Fuller State Park.  Well, the joke was on us.  Even though it is a small-ish campground with 45 sites, at it’s most crowded point over the weekend there were only 6 campers including the camp host.

That long weekend we toured Mud Island, Chucalissa Museum and Beale Street where we had lunch at The Pig,  which has “Pork with an attitude”.  And it was good! Also did some provisioning for the road.

P1070643 (1024x768)P1070644 (1024x768)

It was in Memphis that we started to be real secretive and yes, even spread a little disinformation.  We had been very hush-hush about our location and destination as we really wanted to surprise Frank’s Dad in San Angelo, TX.  He didn’t think he would see us on this trip as we are heading for the northeast for the summer. We called ahead and made arrangements to park Big Guy without him knowing.  We even had help from some of the people at the Manor who kept him distracted while we drove through the parking lot.

The surprise was a huge success and as an added bonus, we got to surprise Frank’s brother Terry and his wife Joy when they came to visit on Sunday, June 3rd.  All in all we were quite pleased that we were able to pull this off. We really wanted to get  an early start on Frank’s Dad’s 90th birthday celebration.

P1000338 (1024x768)

After a week visiting with Dad, we left San Angelo for Georgetown, Texas to see Joy and Terry’s place. We went to Joy’s garden plot to gather some fresh veggies. Once again we used PA at the Berry Springs RV Park.

P1000342 (1024x768)

From there we pointed more or less in the direction of Missouri favoring the eastern side of Oklahoma.  We had never camped in Oklahoma and wanted to fill in that spot on our “states camped in” map.

We found a pleasant little campground (Big Cedar RV Park) in Hodgen, OK that accepted PA for $12 per night.  That included full hookups, 50 amp service, and wi-fi. This is such a  really beautiful area we ended up staying three nights. We drove the  Talimena Scenic Drive that runs from Talihina, OK to Mena, AR.  This drive is on the ridge of mountains that run east-west, one of two mountain ranges in the US that run in that direction.

P1000344 (1024x768)

P1070675 (1024x768)P1070679 (1024x768)

While at the Big Cedar campground, our water pump failed, again.  This is the fourth failure we’ve experienced in one year.  Fortunately, SHURflo has a great 3 year warrantee and once again we were able to exchange it for a new pump.  SHURflo if you’re listening, your Extreme Series 5.7 pumps are junk.

Our next stop was Colaw RV Salvage just outside or Carthage, MO on I-44.  Here lie 100’s and 100’s of wrecked, burned and crushed motorhomes and trailers.  We had a few items on our list that we hoped to find. We spent two hours looking , but everything we wanted had already been picked clean.

P1000356 (1024x768)P1000358 (1024x768)

Our final destination for the day was Louisburg, MO to visit with friends Don and Trish. On the way we swung by Camping World to pick up a spare SHURflo pump.  Given our preference for camping in obscure out of the way places, the last thing we need is for our water pump to give up on us again without a spare.

We rolled into Don and Trish’s about 6:15 on Wednesday June 13 and almost missed Happy Hour.  They were very understanding and extended it just for us.  Their lives are like revolving doors with all the visitors coming and going and we were just real glad they could squeeze us in for a couple of days.  We had a great time, lot’s of laughs, fresh vegetables, good food and wine.  On Friday it was time to go, time to get on with the quest for cooler weather.

P1000369 (1024x768)P1000367 (1024x768)P1000381 (1024x768)

The last two days have been travel days with today being a rest/catch up day.  We stayed at the City Park in Brookfield, MO Friday night and at the City Park here in Bloomfield, IA.  Both places have electric and water at the sites and it’s only $10 a night.

We’ll attempt to update you more often now that that we’re no longer obscuring our location.  Our tentative plans are to eventually reconnect with I-35 and stop by Forest City,IA for a Winnebago factory tour.  If we’re lucky, maybe they’ll look at some things on Big Guy while we’re there.

Then we’ll continue our trek north, eventually arriving at the upper peninsula of Michigan where we’ll cross over into Canada and finally start our eastward journey to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to see the Bay of Fundy.

Getting Ready to GO

Orange Park, FL  - May 15, 2012

We have been trying to get ready to hit the road. We originally thought we would leave May 1. Then we were shooting for May 15. Oh well, just a few more days and we should be on the road, really!!

Here’s EJ fixing the screen tent for our travels.

EJ getting screen tent ready to go

We have been very busy since we returned around the first of December. The holidays, catching up with friends, doctor and dentist visits . And just because we can’t stand to just relax, we decided to finally redo our dock and deck.

This is what the deck area looked like before.

P1070498 (1024x768)P1070499 (1024x768)

We reused as much of the old material that we could to create the expanded dock.

P1070497 (1024x768)P1070515 (1024x768)

Here’s the finished work so far. We still need to add railings and privacy screen.

P1070568 (1024x768)photo (960x720)

The lake is really low because of our drought conditions and it made it a good time to work on the dock. We had pilings put in last year and wanted to finish up what we started. Of course it turned into a major project, but we know we will enjoy it for many years to come.

Most of the work we did on Big Guy was cleaning and fine tuning. Frank did a major reorg of the outside storage bays with customized shelving and bins. He also added a few pull out shelves for EJ inside.

As usual, everything take longer than you think but we don’t have a schedule, so we aren’t going to sweat it. We are ready to head out and find some cooler weather.

Home again, for a few days

Dothan, AL; Lloyd, FL; Orange Park, FL – Thursday to Saturday, November 17 to 19, 2011

We made it back home on day 172. We have mixed feelings about the trip ending. We will only be home for 3 days and will head out to our annual Thanksgiving weekend at our friends river house, so we will still be in travel mode. We decided to not unpack and will probably still “live” in BG until we return on Monday after Thanksgiving. Won’t take the cats in the house, so as not to cause them any trauma. It will be interesting to see how they do after almost 6 months on the road in a small space. Come to think of it , it will be interesting to see how we do!!

We left Blue Ridge, GA Thursday morning. The storms had passed and it looks like clear weather all the way back. At the campground we stayed at for 4 nights, there was no doubt which way we should go.

P1070370

Our route back home will be via DeFuniak Springs, FL so we can stock up at our favorite winery. We sure don’t care for this time change. We only made it as far as Dothan, AL before it was dark. We were back into the central time zone and it was only 5:00.

Friday we made it into Florida. Not too far over the border, we stopped at an Outlets store to see if they had EJ’s favorite shoes at Easy Spirit. Spent more time there than we expected, but found more than we intended. When we got back to BG, we had an unpleasant surprise, the water pump wasn’t working. Both of us thought, oh, no, not again. This is the 3rd pump we are on. Luckily it turned out to only be a blown fuse.

Made it to Chatauqua Winery and got our wine, after a few samples to be sure which ones we wanted. Once again dark got here before we were ready and we only made it to just east of Tallahassee at a travel center.

Up Saturday with only 153 miles to go. Are we dragging our feet or what? We stayed an extra day in Blue Ridge, it took two days to get to DeFuniak Springs and two more days to get to Orange Park, we may as well have tossed out an anchor!

The ever helpful Mocha decided to put her two cents worth in to routing us home.

PICT0001 - Copy

Excited and sad at the same time. We are looking forward to seeing our friends and neighbors, but not getting back to all of the at home responsibilities. Here’s what greeted us when we got home. Looks like we’ll have something to do for the next few days.

P1070378

All in all things were in pretty good shape. We have great neighbors who looked after things while we were gone. We even had a welcome home dinner with John & Jeanne, which made our day.

Stay tuned for another blog after Thanksgiving. We will be posting some trip trivia, highlights and general thoughts about our adventure. It’s been quite a ride.

Blog Catch Up Time

Farmington, NM; Santa Rosa, NM; Big Springs, TS; San Angelo, TX; Waco, TX; Texarkana, TX; Winona, MS; Hiram, GA, Blue Ridge, GA – Sunday, October 30 thru Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Back on the road again working our way back home. We’re on our way to see Frank’s Dad in San Angelo for a few days.  But first we have some more of New Mexico to negotiate.  As you can tell the roads out here are pretty desolate, but beautiful.  The third picture is of Ship Rock mountain, a landmark mentioned often in the Tony Hillerman series of books. Pretty impressive.  From the distance, the second picture appeared to be a hole in a big rock but as we got closer it became two separate rocks.

P1070313P1070314P1070334PICT0002

We’ve been dodging snow storms and endured a day long drive through a West Texas dust storm on our way to Big Springs Texas. Most of the time the wind was at our back, but when it was at our side it got very exciting. It was a nice sunny day and the dust had an interesting effect on it.

PICT0011PICT0012 P1070341

It was just after dark when we got to Big Springs where we’ll spend the night before the final leg to San Angelo tomorrow.

Another strange building along our way.  We couldn’t see any signs indicating what it was used for.

P1070337

We arrived in San Angelo and we got to spend 6 days with Frank’s Dad.  He’s doing real well and definitely has all the good eating spots in San Angelo scoped out.  For instance, a full Mexican dinner for $3 at Gil’s Restaurant, with $2.50 margarita's.  It was half price night. You can’t beat that!  One thing is for sure, Dad won’t starve.

Things are so organized at Dad’s place that we didn’t have to do any remodeling at all this time.  We really enjoyed our visit.

Unfortunately one of his friends had to go into the hospital while we were there, but the good news is that he is back in his apartment now and seems to be recovering well.

After we left Dad’s we spent the next three days making miles.  Our first night was spent in Waco, TX, the second night near Texarkana, and the third night in Winona, MS.  In Winona our anticipated overnight at Walmart didn’t work out.  It wasn’t a Super Walmart and it wasn’t in the best of neighborhoods.  So we backtracked 4 miles to a Pilot Truck stop and spent a fairly quiet uneventful night there.  The next morning we did watch this one fellow walking around the parking lot brushing his teeth and smoking at the same time.  You can see the puffs of smoke behind him.

P1070367

On what was to be our final day of this leg, we had over 400 miles to travel and try as we might, we just ran out of daylight and only made it as far as Dallas, GA.

PICT0002

EJ got a haircut, and gave one to Frank as well, and we got gussied up for the last few miles to Blue Ridge, GA where we will visit with “cousins” Jim and Shelley Ward.

While we were there, Frank and Jim hiked part of the Benton McKay trail and experienced a 267 foot suspension bridge.  After the hike we discovered once again, the many dry counties in northern Georgia, and why you should pack a cooler to take with you.

Picture 006Picture 012

EJ and Shelley went shopping in downtown Blue Ridge and brought home many goodies.

While we were relaxing with Jim and Shelley, EJ enjoys the company of Brody and Maggie.

PICT0002PICT0001

Unfortunately it rained on Tuesday and curtailed our planned trip to the Habersham winery in Helen, GA. So we decided to have a nice breakfast and go to the Mercier Orchard store where we were wowed by all the different varieties of apples, baked goods, and trinkets.  We all ate some miniature pies while we were there and bought other goodies to take along with us.

On Wednesday we had planned to leave to drive to De Funiak Springs, FL to pick up some supplies at the Chautauqua Winery before heading home, but once again bad weather got in the way and we decided to spend another day in Blue Ridge while the storms passed through GA.

While we were waiting, EJ took Frank to the Blue Ridge Antique shop where she had purchased some coffee.  We liked the coffee so much we bought two more pounds to take back to Orange Park with us.  Since it will probably take us 2 or 3 days to get home, we go by the local grocery store to stock up some food for the rest of the trip.

Afterwards, we enjoyed one last evening with the Wards before heading south on Thursday. It really seems hard to believe that we have been gone 24 weeks already!

Natural Bridges In the Middle of Nowhere

Natural Bridges NM Overflow Camping – Saturday, October 29, 2011

It was 33 degrees this morning and our old discussion of “It’s getting too cold” came up again.  We both agreed it was time to move on.  We had been thinking about staying one more day because there were still some hiking trails we wanted to try.  But, not wanting to go out and do anything until the temperature was at least 50 degrees kinda burns up half the day.  We decide to get ready to head down the road.

Mocha, the Travel Cat, has given her seal of approval to the route and now takes her job of guiding us down the road very seriously.

P1070261P1070263

Hiway 24 leaves the park and takes us eastward.  The speed limit is 45mph because the road is very curvy from having to dodge all those cliffs.  The caveat is that they don’t post recommended speeds for the curves.  One curve in particular surprised us (it was one of those that kept getting tighter and tighter) which resulted in several doors flying open and spewing their contents all over the floor.

P1070267P1070268

Our first stop is Hog Springs for a stretch break.  It is a combination picnic and hiking area situated next to two streams.  It also has a large wooden platform, about 20ft by 20ft, whose purpose we could not figure out.  A suspension bridge hung over one of the streams and EJ declined to walk in front of Frank knowing he would just have to wiggle the bridge.

P1070269

On down the road we make another stop high up on a hill overlooking one end of Lake Powell.  We’re looking down at the community named Hite, but you can’t see it because it’s underwater.

P1070275P1070276P1070277P1070278

Then we descend into the Glen Canyon on some pretty steep grades.  At points we’re down to 25mph, letting the engine do the work of providing the braking. Finally we get to go across the Colorado River.

P1070280P1070282

We pass by Fry’s Outpost which is supposed to be a fuel stop, but you can tell it has been closed a long time.  If you really needed fuel you could take a ferry across Lake Powell to Bullfrog Marina.  Fortunately we have enough to make Farmington, NM with a 150 mile reserve.

This part of Utah is really deserted.  Nothing but, sandstone, canyons, and pigmy pines.  Occasionally you’ll see a deserted homestead. A couple of tandem trailer fuel trucks pass us.  Now we can understand why fuel cost more out here.  Transportation charges must be a killer.

We reach Natural Bridges National Monument about 3PM.  We had hoped to stay in their campground, but RV sizes were limited to 26 feet.  No matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t convince them that BG was only 26 feet long.  However, they were nice enough to recommend we stay in their overflow campground about 5 miles back down the road, where there are no size restrictions, facilities or fees.

P1070283

We got to see the 3 natural bridges and ruins the park is famous for, and we learned the difference between arches and bridges.  They look the same, so what’s the difference?  Bridges are formed by flowing water, and arches aren’t.

P1070288P1070293P1070295P1070304

Armed with a map to the overflow campground we head off into the failing light.  We want to get there' before dark even though we’ve been assured it’s easy to find.  The map indicates the campground is down a short dirt road.  The ‘short’ dirt road turns out to be about a mile long and looked as though it hadn’t been maintained in ages.  Ruts big enough to swallow Big Guys tires, a narrow road, and ditches all combined to make this an interesting ride.  EJ was following in the Element and she said BG was really rockin’ and rollin’.

The overflow campground is a large gravel parking lot next to a small canyon.  But we made it and we have it all to ourselves to enjoy.
