Mile Zero–ALCAN Highway

Dawson Creek, British Columbia – Monday, July 11, 2011

Todays trip was a drag, or rather it started out as a drag.  We were so excited about getting away before noon and beginning our journey,  that it took a moment to realize that Big Guy didn’t seem as responsive as usual.  Then we both looked at each other and realized we were dragging the Element instead of towing it.  We forgot to put it into Tow Mode.  Doh!  Another first and hopefully last event.

We got things in order and went over to the Grand Prairie Visitors Center and Museum. They have the largest sundial in North America there. It looked impressive, but since we had no sun we didn’t get to see it in action.

The museum was very good. We spent almost two hours there. Lots of exhibits with lots of information. The Trumpeter Swan is popular in this area. It is one large bird. It makes the Fox Valley Black Swans look like babies. We also learned what the yellow fields we have been seeing are canola farms. Just one of the many crops from around here. We took advantage of the free wifi while we had lunch in the RV.

Finally headed out for the next leg of our journey. Along the way you run across some pretty interesting items. We just couldn’t pass up the photo op with this guy in Beaverlodge, Alberta, CA.

Made a fuel stop and paid the most to date, $4.46 per gallon. The young man at the station said it will be higher in British Columbia. Oh joy, oh joy. We made it to Dawson Creek, BC around 5:30 at our favorite campground, Walmart. this may be the last one on our route. There is a Days Inn next to here and we are able to use their wifi.  We got set up and headed out to town to drive around even though it was raining. We made it to Mile 0 of the Alcan Highway.

Here’s the intersection in town, looks like we still have a long way to go!

Back to the RV for dinner and to relax. At 10pm it was actually lighter outside than it had been all day. Tomorrow we will cross over into the Pacific Time Zone.

  1. I'm betting those Florida tags are looking quite novel to the locals. Are you starting to group up with any of your fellow caravaners at this point?
