Cooler, Greener, Wetter

Sidney, Nebraska – Thursday June 16, 2011

The day started off talking to the fellow next door who was traveling in a Foretravel U320 Motorcoach. He had come from the north on the road we intended to take, Colorado State Road 71.  His advice was to find another route as SR 71 was in terrible shape. On the other hand, having come up US 287 from the south, we had just traveled over some pretty rough road ourselves.  We decided that this road couldn’t be any worse than our road. Turns out, his road was in much better shape than ours was.  SR 71 was narrow, but quite smooth.  We decided he was just extremely picky about his road surfaces. Then later in the day we took Interstate 76(pictured below) which we hoped would be a good road. NOT. Every black strip you see is a bone jarring bump. You just never know what it will be like, but overall, so far, it has been pretty good.

Yesterday was the first day that the temperature was less than 100 degrees. Today is the first day that we saw lush green landscape. So much different than dry, brown TX & OK.

We stopped in Sidney,NE about 4:30 to fuel up and get a few things at the Walmart near by.  Coming out of the store, we noticed a black wall of clouds moving in from the Northwest.  About that time the wind started kicking up and we decided we better find a place to stay the night right now.  We found the Bears Family campground a mile or so away and moved in. Someone from the office came out to talk to us and said three days ago the area was hit by disk shaped hail and it really tore up some of the RVs camped there. He thought the storm today would pass by north of here.

Frank was in the process of setting up the satellite dish and the rain hit. The wind was so strong we had to put the slide-outs in. It was about 2 hours of hard, sideways rain and even some hail. It got really loud inside. Once it had passed, we went outside to see if there was any damage. Luckily it just looked like we has a really good car wash. We are so glad we found our “port in the storm” and were not on the road. The temperature dropped from 72 degrees down to 57. The air conditioner won’t be running tonight. Break out the blankets we finally got our cooler weather!
